COMPANY NEWS: Motorola Solutions has expanded the communications reach of Kansai International Airport, becoming the fifth major airport in Japan to implement mission-critical communications based on the Tetra standard.

Motorola with your partner, Nippon Airport Radio Servicesimplemented the communication system in Kansai following integrations at Narita, Naha, Haneda and Chubu International Airports from 2016 to 2019.

The communications system connects critical functions at all five airports, including security, operations and baggage handling.

The five airports have also deployed more than 9,000 Motorola Solutions ST7000, MTP6550 and MTM5200 two-way radios to support passenger communications. Civil Aviation Office air traffic control, runway management, airport security, ground crew, bus transit services, and commercial airlines.




The deployment is seen as vital as Japan’s tourism and aviation sectors begin to recover from the pandemic and reopen borders to international tour groups this month.

All five airports experience high levels of passenger traffic and Japan’s largest international cargo inflows. Before the pandemic, nearly 200 million domestic and international travelers passed through airports annually, Kansai says.

President and CEO of Nippon Airport Radio Services Yoshikazu Takahashi said the performance of the Tetra communications network and two-way radios far exceeded expectations.

“Behind the scenes of any airport operation is a carefully coordinated set of activities to manage passenger flows, support on-time performance, and maintain safety, security, and customer satisfaction,” said Takahashi.

“Motorola Solutions’ advanced Tetra technology has helped our airports coordinate complex operations every day, as well as proven resilient to typhoons, blizzards and other disasters on many occasions,” he said.
